The basic psychological dynamic of masculinity is that men are men because they aren’t women. Women are the hated Other. Hating her, hurting her, is how boys become men. Masculinity breeds a personality based on entitlement, arrogance and cruelty, which is compelled to prove itself again and again. Inherent in masculinity is a violation imperative: in acts of invading and conquering, men become men. The brilliance of male supremacy is that it links acts of political oppression to sexual response. Not only is the soldier-rapist rewarded with orgasm when he dominates/rapes, but his action feels “natural” rather than political. This welding of domination and subordination to sexual arousal, and the accompanying normalization of oppression, is the deep heart of patriarchy.
Sexual domination and subordination are institutionalized into the very concepts of masculine and feminine. Masculinity is simply a conglomeration of the personality traits necessary for the patriarchal soldier-rapist: physically strong, emotionally cauterized, rational, domineering, cruel. All of this is supposed to add up to ‘handsome’ as well. Likewise femininity is ultimately a description of the personality that results from trauma and powerlessness: weak, passive, yielding, emotional, hyper-vigilant to the needs of the dominators and desperate for the dominator’s attention."

The most dangerous thing society teaches boys and men, especially white boys and men, is that their emotions are objective logic and reason and that anyone who disagrees is being irrational.
Me teaching US history: “ok first thing u gotta remember is that this country exists because a bunch of rich white dudes didn’t want to pay their taxes. The second thing u gotta remember is that rich white men still don’t want to pay their taxes which is pretty much the reason for literally everything ever.”
“A villain is just a victim whose story hasn’t been told.”
Why is this one of the things recommended for me on my dash.
There’s so much wrong with this.
1. The quote is bullshit, and indicative of everything terrible about our society, which constantly puts the pain of the abuser above those they abuse.
2 It also grossly furthers the idea that all victims are potential abusers. Which has real life ramifications, because this is actually something that survivors of child abuse fear and one of the reasons they do not always come forward.
3. Bucky has no goddamn business being in this set. He wasn’t a villain. He actually was a victim.
4. We saw Anakin’s story. We KNOW his story. Cool story, bro, but you still murdered children. You are not now and never shall be a fucking victim, but those babies were, so fuck you and fuck your defenders and especially fuck anyone who would think that you are a goddamn victim.
5. We know Magneto’s story intimately. It has been told often. He was a victim once. And then he decided that Genocide was okay.
6. Fuck Fake White Khan and we do in fact know Real Khan’s story. He did think he was a victim, but no, he was not. He was a complicated and amazing villain that went against the typical type of POC villains that we get - he was brilliant and clever and not just a “thug.” But he was not a victim (no, not even after the neighboring planet went boom.)
7. We know Loki’s story too. It’s one of a whiny spoiled brat who keeps trying to commit genocide.
tldr: Bucky has no business being in this set. The rest of these people are murderous terrible people. They are not victims, though some of them were once.
I waited to reblog this, specifically for someone to express this^^. tumblr delivered.
Just want to reiterate:
"3. Bucky has no goddamn business being in this set. He wasn’t a villain. He actually was a victim."
I so agree with that comment. Most of the villains above are well-written, interesting characters who have a complicated backstory and retain sympathetic traits even while committing evil acts. Some of them suffer internal conflict over their actions, or serve as temporary allies to the heroes. But that does not erase the horrible things they did: punching someone makes you a villain, being punched makes you the victim, and believing otherwise makes you the sort of person to make excuses for real-life murderers as long as they are young, white and handsome. Many of the Hungarian NeoNazis that make me worried for my friends’ safety are clueless young men with terrible home lives and no prospects in life - but as long as they try to solve their problems by beating up Romani kids, I won’t have much sympathy for them.)
(And while most of these characters were victims at some point in their lives, please note that they are not taking revenge on the one who wronged them, they are turning against a third party. Gollum is an awesome anti-villain but he committed murder before he was ever victimized, Malfoy is pressured into villainy by his shitty family but he definitely isn’t a victim, and Loki becomes a genocidal shithead over what is basically a minor miscommunication.)

"f only Michael Brown, instead of holding his hands over his head, reached down to his waist and lifted up his shirt, to show the gun he did not actually have, well, this whole tragedy could’ve been avoided.
Do you not understand that life in this country is inherently different for white people and black people?”
Here’s a sure-fire way to know that you hate women: when an incident of intimate partner violence in which a man knocks a woman unconscious gains national attention and every question or comment you think to make has to do with her behavior, you really hate women. Like, despise.
There is no other explanation. There is no ‘I need all the facts.’ There is no excuse. You hate women. Own it.
Now, you probably don’t believe you hate women. You probably honestly think you’re being an objective observer whose only interest is the truth. You are delusional."
